Thiago Silva cleared to play for Chelsea vs Aston Villa

Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has been cleared to play Saturday’s game against Aston Villa.

Silva was set to miss out because of Brazil wanting to invoke the ‘five-day rule’ after the Premier League decided not to send players from the country to World Cup qualifiers.

However, late on Friday night it was reported – and subsequently confirmed by FIFA – that Brazil have decided not to continue to seek a ban on players playing this weekend.

Chile, Mexico and Paraguay had also joined Brazil in looking to stop players from taking part in this weekend’s matches but they too have withdrawn their complaints.

The only impact that would have had on Villa ‘s Premier League clash with Chelsea was the absence of Silva, the Champions League-winning former Paris Saint-Germain centre-back.

It was likely that he was going to come in for one of Tuchel’s three central defenders having impressed off the substitutes’ bench against Liverpool while Chelsea were down to ten men last time out.

However Tuchel could decide to rest him given the uncertainty.

Either way it is a big boost for Chelsea that the 36 year-old has been cleared to play.

Meanwhile Villa are still without Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia, who are still in quarantine after the extraordinary scenes in Brazil during Argentina’s World Cup qualifier last weekend.

A FIFA statement has said that there has been ‘positive signals and constructive dialogue’ from the UK Government ahead of the next international break.

Chelsea fans had their say on the Silva update and took to social media.

“Great to hear,” one fan said.

Another asked: “Does he even make the team?”

“Good, time to play legend Silva,” a third supporter said while another added: “Christensen is still starting because Tuchel probably prepared for it just in case.”

“Great news,” said a fifth supporter.
