Tyrone Mings’ order to Kortney Hause proved central to Man United’s downfall

Following criticism for his error in Aston Villa’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea, Tyrone Mings has bounced back and dominated proceedings in both of the games that have followed.

He was a prominent figure in the five at the back yesterday at Manchester United and the 1-0 win wouldn’t have been possible without him.

He recorded five clearances, four blocks and four interceptions. The task of facing the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Pogba would intimidate any defender in the world, but Mings showed the quality he possesses here as he orchestrated an unbreakable Villa back line.

His leadership was on display more ways than just the vocal organisation he displays so frequently. He instructed Kortney Hause to take his role from set pieces which is to meet the initial ball and cause havoc with a flicked-on header either on goal or to his teammates. Hause stated this in an interview with Match of the Day:

“It wasn’t even my role from set pieces. Tyrone Mings just said to me ‘you do my job’ and I’ve started on the keeper and peeled off at the front, glancing header and I knew as soon as it touched my head that it was in. Hearing the fans scream just tops it off.”

Mings’ reading of the game to identify Hause as a main threat to United and make this adjustment on the pitch has ultimately won Villa their first game against this opponent for the first time in over a decade.

Mings is only 28 years of age but constantly display the experience and judgement of someone well beyond this. It is moments like this which outline why both Dean Smith and Gareth Southgate are so fond of him. He is a massive presence both on and off the pitch and continues to display what a fantastic leader he is for this club.

It was a team performance but this on field decision form Mings must be applauded as a key moment in this game which ultimately has resulted in all three points returning to Birmingham.
