Villa tipped to seal Gomez transfer because of Gerrard & Klopp

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has been tipped to use contacts at Liverpool to seal a loan move for Joe Gomez.

Reports in the national press have claimed that Villa could make a move for Gomez when the transfer window reopens in January.

Gomez has struggled for game-time this season and is currently out with a calf injury.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk ahead of Gomez in the club’s pecking order at centre-back.

Gomez has managed only 13 Premier League minutes this season but played 28 times in the title winning 2019-20 campaign.

It would be a surprise to see Villa move for Gomez on loan in January given he is unlikely to edge out either Tyrone Mings or Ezri Konsa.

Axel Tuanzebe is also an option at centre-back as is Kortney Hause but with the former returning to Old Trafford in the summer and the latter out of contract in the summer movement will need to be made at the end of the season.

Former Leeds United and Derby County striker Noel Whelan, meanwhile, reckons Gerrard and Klopp will hatch a plan to get Gomez – or another Liverpool player – in on loan in January.

“He’s a very good player,” Whelan told website Football Insider.

“Gerrard obviously has that added pulling power at Liverpool, which could enable him to get some of these loan players in.

“I’m sure he and Jurgen Klopp have got a really good relationship, as he will with the whole club.

“It doesn’t surprise me that his first port of call is his old club, because he knows what he’s going to get, and the players will respect him and know everything about him.

“It’s no different to what a lot of managers do. Gerrard will use his contacts, use his pull as a legend of the game.

“If Gomez comes in, he will be a quality addition to that Villa defence.”
